It's a dynamic longditudinal microsimulation.  [Aren't you glad you asked?]
Specifically, it's a big complex computer program that takes the public access 
1971 Canadian Census data and using historical rates, advances the population 
to the current day, and then using the "official" projected rates from the 
Chief Actuaries, projects the population out into the future, simulating 
things like birth, death, migration, labour force participation, retirement, 
marriage (and divorce), etc, etc, etc.

And, also, my day job. :)
