Hi everyone,
Does anyone here teach in a board where they do portfolio assessment,
rubrics etc.? This is the latest push at our board. I attended a
workshop last week (3 mornings) all about assessment and evaluation and
got a good general overview. Made me realize all the things I didn't
know and do.
I have a friend who started portfolios in her kindergarten last year.
She did it on writing. The kids had a rubrics checklist - such as finger
spacing, neatness, punctuation, etc. They did self evaluations and
student led conferences. (I don't think she had all of them participate
- but am not sure) you wouldn't believe the level of writing coming out
of this class. The grade one teachers can't wait to get her kids! BTW,
kindergarten here is Junior and Senior level usually in one class. Many
of her Juniors were writers at the end of the school year. A Whole
Language classroom by the way! :)
As a supply (substitute to you Yanks )I worked in this classroom a
lot the teacher kids and I have a great rapport. (Now I have to talk to
her about her Math Program - which IMHO needs work ) I think Dan
(and others) would really like what is going on in the kindergarten
classrooms at this particular school and many others in my area.
(Okay, okay, I will now get off my soapbox).....Ruth
