If I were a BBS freak, it probably would.  ;-)

I'm thinking that any such application would require asynchrony in the
communication, so one of the machines would need to be a Message Server.

The Message server is always ready to accept or deliver a message of
1-255 bytes, held in any of several queues, using the &PUTMSG and
&GETMSG operations.

I developed an Instant Messaging system to serve Apple II's on a
NadaNet for use at this year's KFest, but there didn't seem to be
much interest in running a cable down the hall...  ;-)
