Actually, it was invented by yours truly.  And AWA pissed it against the
wall, reckoning that it would never get off the ground because it was too
complicated, and delivered performance that wasn't wanted anyway...:-(

Would have been about 1969, and the original implementation was a set of
discrete modulator/demodulators, constructed from PICCOLO gear.  (A
maritime radio technique we flogged, where a RTTY ran on individual
very-narrow-band tone signals.  Noise immune as all getout.  A full set in
simultaneous operation was exactly the original PEP spec.)

Telebit implemented it in full digital using a Motorola 68000, which did
make it practical.  AWA had the skills to have done that in house - but put
'em to work doing documentation for microwave landing systems instead.

Bum outcome.  Australian looser complex, same as usual, lousy show,
umpteenth rerun...

Sigh.  Frustration is.
