Hi Charles:
DT>CB>RL>Now, isn't that interesting because the studies I've read said
>CB>RL>there is no difference - at least in learning to read - between
>CB>RL>Whole Language or Traditional (phonics) methods except for
>CB>RL>children who learn the WL way are more likely to enjoy the
>CB>RL>process. Again I would point to the misconception and possibly
>CB>RL>inefficiency in teaching Whole Language programs in the U.S. (and
>CB>RL>even probably in Canada).
DT>CB>Dan too has mentioned that whole language is based on research. No
>CB>one has yet posted any of that research here, but I'd enjoy reading
>CB>a little of it if you can find it. As quoted in my article, the
>CB>American Federation of Teachers was unable to find well constructed
>CB>research that supports whole language.
Re: the above - don't you just hate it when you write a long message to
someone and wait ages for a reply then pick up a message from someone
else replying to the reply you have been waiting for? In other words I
never received the above reply. :(
Do you still have it? Would love you to repost it. If you have access to
email you can mail it to me (then I can be sure to get it) at
Ruth_LeBlanc@sbe.scarborough.on.ca
I wrote a paper on Reading for University and somewhere I have all the
articles (I hope) - I at least have the paper and the bibliography.
Actually I wrote two papers on Reading one for Educational Psychology as
an undergrad and another with an LD slant for my Additional
Qualification to get my Special Ed. I keep meaning to quote some parts
of it - I got an "A"- I did lots of research for the papers. I'm
notoriously bad at posting messages that require me to do a little
"brainwork" as I am so busy writing "off the cuff" messages to everyone
else. ;) If it's a short quote and I can lay my hands on it then I do it
otherwise........ :( I admire your perseverance. You have internet
though right? I am not so lucky. What's it like browsing through the
web?
Our board of ed has a web site - have to give you the address when I
find it. ;)
Now, I have to go find other snippets in Dan's messages from you that I
need to comment on.
Ruth
