It's a willing suspension of reality, as far as I can tell...  Perhaps
the poor acting gives it a sense of verisimilitude...?  (See... they
HAVE to be real... actors would do a better job!  (Or something like
that...  ))

What's worse, one can see one show and then, a year or two later, happen
to see another, and STILL not have lost the thread....!  Or, see it
years later, and still recognize some/most of the characters... 
Granted, 20 years later one needs to watch a couple of shows to pick up
the story line again... sort of...  The plots don't really change all
that much... it's just the "next generation" doing it this time...
