| subject: | Even non-intel prices are dropping |
* Original message posted in: INF-HDWR. * Crossposted in: UNIX. I can get a Sparc 4 with built-in graphics, 128 MB RAM, and 4 GB of disk for $1300. Normally, I'm a Free UNIX fan, but I do like Solaris and Sparc hardware for production purposes. The stuff NEVER breaks. I've had enough bargain-basement Intel-based servers die when they were powered down for an hour or so - the power supply solder cools and cracks, then the circuit's broken when you want to bring it back up. Suns seem like they're built better - I've never had a problem like that, and have a couple of Suns with hellaciously long uptimes. Solaris 2.6 is a nice package - the server edition comes with everything you'd need. I'm looking forward to upgrading my current mailserver, a Sparc 5, and putting a fresh copy of Solaris on it, and putting it on my desktop. It'll replace an aged Sparc 2 that's been my syslog/mail/spatch/ping host. --- timEd 1.10.y2k+* Origin: Channel Z: Oakland, CA +1 510 336 1035 (1:161/418) SEEN-BY: 396/1 632/0 371 633/260 267 270 284 371 634/397 635/444 506 725 728 SEEN-BY: 639/252 @PATH: 161/418 84 42 215/34 270/101 396/1 633/260 635/506 728 633/267 |
