MTU is cosmic, but without icmp it can be cosmically broken so I enabled
icmp to the server to see if that makes a difference. It can also be icmp
blocking at your end. Usually since icmp will work to the nearest router to
the news server that should prove sufficient for your end to determine max
MTU but going the other way could have been the problem so I opened icmp.
