Nope, remote is a V.34+ Sportster using the init string recommended by
USR for MBBS software.
Sysop later indicated that his Sportsters have bad rom and that USR is
in the process of sending him upgraded rom chips.
I'm finding that difficult to accept but time will tell, maybe.
