Hi Sheila,
You and Charles were discussing reading:
CB>SK>Arrgh! Accuracy is not an essential goal of reading?
CB>I do believe that whole language theorists believe that an accurate
  >reading of each single word is less important than gathering
  >understanding from the text.
I think Charles put it rather well.
Sheila, can you honestly say that when you read you read every single
word? For every single genre that you read?
I know I, for one, do not. If I am reading something as finicky (as in
the importance of the words) I read very slowly and assimilate each word
and search for the meaning. When I am reading fiction I tend to read
much faster - sometimes I will read slow fast (if you get my meaning?)
and sometimes faster depending on the format of the writing and the way
an author writes, also what is happening at the time.
When I read to the kids (and I am an excellent story reader - or so I
have been told since my own children were very small) at school I often
realize that I have not read the correct word. My mind is racing ahead
of my lips and what comes out is not always the word that the author
wrote. Now as long as the meaning and context are okay I don't bother to
change it. When I am reading to students who are following the text with
me I sometimes stop and go back and correct the word whether it makes
sense or not. I think this also lets the children know that we make
mistakes too and encourages them to be risk takers.
Well what do you think?
                        Ruth
BTW, still have to post you about the spelling. I have to assimilate
some stuff so I can write it in a coherent form. ;)
I'm very busy right now taking inservices at my Board of Ed. Last week
it was Rubrics and Portfolio Assessment, etc. this week it is Math. I'm
having a lot of fun finding out new things. Tomorrow in Math we are
integrating Science and Technology - we were told to wear old clothes -
can hardly wait!
CB>SK>I would think that discussion in this conference alone would
  >SK>demonstrate how incorrect that statement is. We nitpick over words
  >SK>here. And when reading medical works or law, isn't accuracy important?
CB>I recently spent a couple of years working on a district plan to reform
  >our schools (that's another story) as part of a community committee. I
  >drove most of the other committee members crazy because I kept a
  >dictionary by my side and insisted that we verify the meaning of any
  >words that seemed to be the point of dissension.
CB>SK>Anyone who thinks that the accuracy of a single word is not important
n
  >SK>teaching reading is IMO simply wrong!
CB>I think you're getting a sense of why traditionalists are frustrated
  >with the whole language process.
