Hello,
RS> Simple, if they are on a bicycle they need a license. If they are on
RS> a bicycle that does not have the license attached, then they are in
RS> violation and should be ticketed. Perhaps even the Parents could
RS> be cited for letting their youngster ride without proper validation.
Ahh, big brother to the rescue! Maybe, if bikers apply for a special
permit, and pay an extra $20, they could get an endorsement on their license
to allow them to carry a (gasp) water bottle too! I bet you hate it when
people trample your grass, I think we need licenses for walking.
Want to take a stroll around the block after work and enjoy the fresh air,
well, step right up and get your license from your friendly local police
officer.
Municipalities that require bike licenses aren't at all interested in
safety, they are interested in revenue. Just look at cars! Any idiot
can get a drivers license, if you think the process of obtaining a license
to operate a motor vehicle is making the roads safer, take a spin down
your local freeway and see how many of these state licensed motorists
cut you off, don't signal, drive erratically, etc...
If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, why not write a check to
your local bike club, or become a member of a national club. Bike
license revenue rarely goes to help secure bicycle lanes in traffic, promote
bicycle legislation, or maintain bike trails (either on or off road).
If you feel strongly about this matter, why not take some of YOUR time
and volunteer to start some sort of bicycle skills education program
at your local cop shop? Writing tickets is a band-aid fix for a problem
that was overblown in the first place.
