subject: TelNet File Transfers

Hi Nancy,

About "TelNet File Transfers" of May 9:

NB> ...I can only upload reply packets to ones that have the kermit
NB> protocol... I keep hoping that someone has figured out a way for
NB> Zmodem to work for telnet uploads when strictly in DOS...
MS> ...my .QWK/.REP message-packets routinely transfer both ways...
MS> ...`Kermit' transfers typically reach rates ranging between 2 and
MS> 3K5 Kcps... ...cps figures with `WildCat!' hosts trying a ~ZMoDem~
MS> transfer are around 1K5 cps... ...the INet connection is from a 56
MS> Kbps HardWare MoDem over here and i do this on a P-200 Mhz MMX...
NB> ...my wizard hubby takes care of all that... I passed along your
NB> information to him... ...to me it's all magic spells and cantrips,
NB> but he knows about this stuff. Thank you for your input.

Well, i wish someone had done the same for me when my long-distance
provider gave me a free 1 year (5h/month) ~PPP~ courtesy access: i only
knew how to use `{Commo}' for DialUp sessions so their whole deal passed
under my nose before i could even say that ~TelNet~ BBSing is accessible
to ANYONE with a MoDem (V.22Bis or later) and a PC (practically ANY PC)!

If this material can help in any way be certain i'll be glad... :)

I published `LSPPPDlr' as my legacy and one decade after BBSing has
replaced my programmable calculator as a hobby there should be what i'll
call my "Ready-Made kit". In the meantime, the necessities of life keep
distracting me from this goal when i'm not just waiting for stimuli so i
can only offer what one might call a Beta version; the `Wizard' and few
refinements on which i've worked since my last release of 2002 must wait
and when i'll get a chance to work on it again i may not see any motive.

Well, the basics are there and this was solely intended to disprove
discouraging statements from those who insisted that i should UpGrade my
HardWare and use `Windows', anyway... At the start it was a prototype i
published so that others could get their own results but it still wasn't
incentive enough to the SysOps/authors community, the status of DOS INet
BBSing improves very slowly because only a few simple users is all which
is left behind; what i got is all you get so we must push hard! Sorry.

                                  8,-)

At least you're not alone and i bet Winston Smith might help too...

NB> Craig still has Wildcat 4. It works really well for zmodem
NB> downloads, but the only thing that works is the kermit uploads.

I've verified that outpostbbs.us has rendered `Kermit' suitable for
~TelNet~ use lately and now i find Craig Healy's "Real Kermit" option is
back On-Line. That's good news to me, once the work on aborted transfer
recovery (`Kermit' ReSend) is done and we know our message-pointers will
change only after success of the transfer has been confirmed positively,
euh... then i'll have to declare that i'm fully delighted and relieved!

                                  8^)

Euh... While i think of it, can you tell what's the ~CPU~'s speed?
If your guru is to try `RLFossil' then let him know performance degrades
as processor speed decreases: a 286-12 Mhz should still work but that's
the bare minimum i recommend to anyone who might lack the patience! ;-)

NB> The few times that I actually called direct dial, I have no problems
NB> with zmodem uploads either... And I simply do not do Windows...

A bit similar over here, i still DialUp and i'm no programmer. ;->

I've ignored `Windows' myself for a long time since i didn't use to
have the HardWare so i know what it's like to want to BBS under DOS! :)

As i mentioned previously, very few BBS people can pretend to be in
control of their ~ZMoDem~ parameters as these are "Hard-Coded", usually;
if a user can't make ~ZMoDem~ negociate parameters suitable for ~TelNet~
then it becomes the chore of his SysOp - and i don't see it happening!!!
What i can foresee is a category of Virtual ~TelNet~ MoDem users who got
their setup just right for ~ZMoDem~, on both ends, to agree on something
which works well enough - i believe the authors of `COMIP' and such give
a few hints to their ~TelNet~ SysOp users, actually... I think ~ZMoDem~
negociation might very well be the key and my '94 copy of `Quick Link II
Fax' user's guide reads as follows on page W56: "ZModem is a relatively
young transfer protocol, not identically implemented"... If one can get
his SysOp to use `MS-Kermit' as the protocol driver while that's his own
terminal emulator then both parties each gain extensive control over the
file transfer protocol's parameters, not to mention 100 % compatibility;
~TelNet~ media interference with ~ZMoDem~ negotiation can be sorted out!

This is what the BBS SysOp/author community failed to see when they
were given `MS-Kermit v3.14 Medium' in 1995 and `v3.15' in 1997!!! %-b,

They made the choice, you live with the consequences. That's why i
can't but agree if one expresses his gratitude to a guy like Craig Healy
who still cares to give `MS-Kermit' a try despite the mishaps around it.

                                   :)

Now if he could just publish his setup so that others can offer the
same to their DOS INet BBSers this would be great (life i made of hope)!

                                    Salutations, ;-)
