I took that to mean he was encouraging its discontinuation.  In any case ..

After seeing the latest 12K chain letter thing, acting on the unanimous
support of the dozen or so people who netmailed me (thanks, folks) I've
written to Mick Howland asking that the gating be discontinued forthwith.

As I now have access to that newsgroup, I can see if this was successful :)
