 man has been shot dead by the police on the outskirts of Hull.
Humberside Police say they were called to the A63 near Welton after a report
of a van driving the wrong way down the eastbound carriageway.

After what they say was an "incident" one man was shot first with baton
rounds and then a firearm.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Independent Police Complaints
Commission (IPCC) is to conduct an investigation.

Police had sent armed officers to the area after they were told about the
van driving in the wrong direction coupled with reports of someone
brandishing a weapon at 0620 GMT.

The A63 is a continuation of the M62 and is the main route into Hull from
the west.




Police activity is centred around a Little Chef diner and a filling station
at the side of the dual carriageway about 10 miles west of Hull.

The road is closed in both directions and will stay closed until at least
lunchtime, police say.

The traffic chaos caused by the shooting incident led to the adjournment of
the inquest into the death of skydiver Stephen Hilder on Tuesday.

Coroner Stewart Atkinson said the Army cadet's family were staying at a
hotel within the police cordon on the north bank of the River Humber and
would be unable to attend the inquest in Scunthorpe for several hours.

He said the Hilder family were not involved in the incident itself but that
he would adjourn the inquest until Wednesday morning.
