See:
http://www.willbell.com/tm/tm3.htm
specifically appendix J that tells you how to make a Twyman Viscosity Tester.

The device is dog simple and can be made in a few minutes. But you can
measure hardness of pitch, and determine what temperature range is workable
for a given type of pitch. You no longer have to depend on bad advice.
You will be the shop foreman in charge of your own 'process control team.'
You are empowered.

Sadly, I almost never hear folks mention this useful device. Instead, lots
of word-of-mouth advice is passed on about pitch hardness without much in
terms of measurable/verifiable evidence.

We must collectively take a stand against such sloppy
practices...especially when controlled, repeatable measuring techniques are
close at hand.
