subject: No joy with traceroute

From: Randall Parker

Got Linux connected to a Netgear FVG318 VPN Firewall connected to a DSL
modem by Westell (Model 6100).

The traceroute command effectively does not work beyond my DSL modem:

[randall{at}localhost ~]$ traceroute news.barkto.com traceroute to
news.barkto.com (216.144.1.254), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
  1 FVG318 (192.168.1.46) 24.226 ms 22.965 ms 18.288 ms
  2 dslrouter (192.168.1.1) 24.333 ms 20.351 ms 38.084 ms
  3 * * *
  4 * * *
  5 * * *
  6 * * *
  7 * * *
  8 * * *

and stars continue beyond that point.

I enabled ICMP in the Netgear box and also unchecked "Enable Stealth
Mode" in the Netgear firewall.

Might the DSL modem be blocking some kind of traffic?

I don't believe that the Linux box's settings are causing this since if
that was the case I would not expect to get timings for the first two hops.

Any ideas?
