Ken,
All of the engines that I have worked with, both 2c and 4c, gives a range of 
recommended propellars to use.  These will vary in pitch and diameter.   
Putting to big of a propellar will cause the engine not to reach the peak rpm
for that engine, and causes the engine to work harder and wear sooner.  
Putting to small of a propellar on an engine causes the engine to have to 
any
rpms which will cause the engine to overheat and shorten the life of the 
engine.  
Work with the dia x pitch of the propellar range specified by the 
anufacturer
until it performs to the way you like to fly.
