subject: Dynalink connect probs

Hi people,

I'm back with a minor problem with my new replacement Dynalink 28800
rockwel based fax/modem (gave the v34+ sportster clone away as a bad
joke, dynalink were happy to replace it no questions asked).

My problem is this, henever I attempt to connect with my ISP I usually
end up with a non-error correcting connection. With a bit a luck and
persistance I can usually manage a standard error correcting connect
after 5-8 attempts (phone bill is getting out of control :( )

My setup is AT&F&C1&D2X3W2%E2&W with just ATZ as my init. string

After some experimenting I found I could get a consistent connect using
S48=128. When connecting I get the following result codes
CONNECT 28800/ARQ
PROTOCOL: ALT
COMPRESSION: V42BIS

According to the manual this suggests that I have MNP error correction
ith V42bis compression. However I thought that MNP correction only
worked with MNP5 compression and LAPM correction worked with V42bis.
Maybe I'm missing something but the manual states "protocol:alt means
an MNP connection has been made".

Either way it does work when everything else has failed but I must admit
that ftp transfers are slow as treacle. Text transfers (newsgroups and
email) are excellent but ftp on compressed files are very slow eg
400-500 cps.

Can anyone shed any light on this and also any suggestions for a good
init string.

Cheers
Mike
