Hello walt and listers,
If anything was wrong with our taking the air lines to task I bbelieve
that it is in not making our own members and others thoroughly understand
why all the fuss over the seating of blind passingers. Perhaps if more of
a connection was made between this, and encouraging the air lines to
employ blind persons maybe more people would understand the connection and
there wouldn't be as much opposition from both with, and out side of the
Federation, and yes, much more could have been done.
I once received a message from a blind man who once worked for American
Air lines here in San antonio before they implamenteed their SAver
Reservations System which among other things in somewhat graphicly
oriented making it a challange to access as a blind employee. Hence we
have not been able to get American Air Lines to hire blind workers in
their reservation center here in San antonio. The gentleman I spoke of
tried to urge American to use another system so it would be accessible to
the blind, but just like listening to our reasoning whare the seating of
blind passingers is concerned they refused to hear him out, and moddify
the Saver System so it could be accewsed by the blind; there are the lost
job opportunities. This man was subsiquently fired by American dispite
the fact that he had an excelent employment record. His objedction to the
New Saver System as it was proposed played a major roll in his
termination. So, thenext time we engage in air line wars of one kind or
another remember this man and what happened. Dr. Jernigan has referred to
the air lines as the Nation's biggest bully. They sure proved it in this
instance.
Take care and have a good weekend.
