To see if samba is running, run the ps command (under FreeBSD, is use the
command   ps aux ) and look for programs called:  smbd  and  nmbd


Those are the two programs I see for my install of Samba.  You might also
want to run the  locate  command to see if they are on disk (presuming your
locate updater has run already).
