Agreed, that just because they THINK they deserve it doesn't mean that
they will get it.  Also agreed that there are legitimate ways to side
step an incipient situation (and that that can make conflict less
likely).

Perhaps I should clarify just a bit...  I'm usually not using the term
directly TO the person, it's just the way I'd describe it to myself.  So
it isn't a case of trying to please someone (usually a futile task
anyway...!) by using it.  Just that my usual way of dealing with people
is to have an outward demeanor of graciousness toward them no matter how
I may be feeling about them inwardly.  And, as above, I'm not above
finding ways to avoid needing to deal with people where inward and
outward don't match up well...  ;)
