Rep. Barr - "Those waiting for a smoking gun - both barrels are smoking"
 
Barr urges House to take up H. Res 304 - Inquiry of Impeachment -
Immediately.
 
Congressman Bob Barr (GA7) urged the House to immediately take up H. Res.
304, an Inquiry of Impeachment, upon its return next week. The Inquiry of
Impeachment would ultimately instruct the House Judiciary Committee to
investigate the numerous serious and credible allegations of misconduct by
President Clinton. The Inquiry of Impeachment (H. Res 304) was introduced
by Barr and 18 cosponsors on November 5, 1997.
 
Statement by Congressman Barr: "For those in the House who have been
waiting for a smoking gun, both barrels are smoking. These latest
allegations of witness tampering, obstruction of justice, perjury and
improper moral behavior should not be dismissed out of hand as the
president would have us do. Rather, they should be investigated by the
Judiciary Committee as part of a broader impeachment investigation looking
into all the allegations of presidential misconduct.
 
"The White House has long engaged in a pattern of unethical behavior going
as far back as the firing of the White House travel office, the improper
acquisition of secret FBI files, and the most recent very serious reprimand
by U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth who charged the Administration
with engaging in a cover-up regarding the 1993 Health Care Task Force.
 
"If proven to be true, today's allegations are reprehensible and beyond
the pale of appropriate behavior for a sitting president and are certainly
grounds for impeachment. However, we must not lose sight of the other
serious and credible allegations of misconduct that have plagued this
Administration since the beginning.
 
"H. Res. 304 is the proper vehicle to investigate the myriad of
allegations leveled against the president. The House must do its
constitutional responsibility and take the very measured step of beginning
an investigation to determine if the president has committed impeachable
offences.
