subject: transaxel or torque convertor

my '95 Gran Prix has started to get a "slip" in it after some
time of driving... in the past, i'd been told that there's no overdrive on
my vehicle but that it was using a "lock-up torque convertor"
which supposedly locks to the shaft to give a 1:1 turning ration once
cruising speed was reached...

the symptom is that while cruising, you'll feel it "shift"...
almost a "bounce"... if you watch the tachometer, you'll see it
go from 2000 and slide easily up to 2500 and then a few seconds later,
you'd feel that "shift" again and it'll drop back to 2000...
it'll do this a few times and then generally settles out and operates
normally... sometimes i mash on it and force passing gear for a few seconds
and then back off of it... that seems to work, too...

so, i dunno... is there a lock-up torque convertor on this vehicle? what
would cause it to unlock during normal cruising (~60mph)? could it be
something as simple as fluids? i've checked them by the owner's manual and
they seem to be fine :?
