With a modem there are two links the phone line and the port speed. V42bis
is on the fly compression when data like a text file is sent to the modem
the modem will try to compress it before it is sent for this to work
properly the port speed needs to be set higher than the line speed.

In theory V42bis can compress the data 4X, I have had 5500 cps with a 14400
modem this was a test file about 200K of "spaces" designed to
push the serial link and modem to the limits.

Before other 14400 users comment on this transfer you can only get this
sort of speed if BOTH ends lock the serial port at 57600.

For general use the serial port should be set to about 2X the line speed
57600 should be enough for a 28800 modem. Unless the other end has the port
speed set above 57600 you will gain nothing from going higher.

Regards, Malcolm.
