My Linux box has an ethernet port that connects to my firewal box. The
firewall does sharing of a single DSL modem internet connection for
multiple PCs. At the moment I have both this Linux box and a WinXP Home
laptop connected to the internet. That works.
Question: In order to make my Linux box into an SMB server I think I need
to add a static IP address to the Linux box on that ethernet port. Can I do
that and still have the Linux box get a dynamic IP address from the
firewall for internet traffic?
Question: I'm assuming the firewall (Netgear FVG318 Prosafe VPN Firewall)
will pass local traffic between local PCs as well as route certain traffic
out onto the internet. Is that correct?
Question: I'm also assuming the firewall recognizes by the destination IP
address whether the packet has a local or internet destination. Is that
correct?
Another alternative I have is to use a second ethernet port in the Linux
box and connect that to the Firewall as well and assign a local IP address
to that port for local traffic. Not sure if doing that would help any.
Question: What sort of IP address to use as a local address?
