It was actually invented in 1933 by Edwin H. Armstrong who tried do
develop FM on his own after being shunned by the well established
AM manufacturer's--especially RCA. He created the "Yankee" FM network
and licensed other firms to build FM sets in the mid '30s. The
frequency he used was about 45 MHZ until RCA lobbied the FCC to change
the FM band to the current 88-108 MHZ which effectively crushed
Armstrong's network and made all of his radios obsolete. The would be
in the early-mid '40s. I'd like to find one of Armstrong's original
45 MHZ sets.
