[The previous message concludes here.] 3/3
DOS environment variables are used by the `MS-Kermit' .INI file and
these also take part in the creation of the `WatTCP' configuration file,
the DOS `HOST' variable isn't being used as of yet but could be included
easily in this setup so that a user only needs to type "Launch URL" from
the DOS command-line to have `MS-Kermit' "Dial" to a remote system which
isn't pre-defined... In semi-manual mode you get six of them ("Sailor",
"OutPost", "Car", "COMMPort",
"Sursum" and "ChowDaNet"). At the moment,
only numeral ~IP~ addresses will work but i sort of wonder if the router
which gives me access to the ~DSL~ MoDem might not be programmed to make
a ~BootP~ server available locally - at least it already supports ~DHCP~
because `MS-Kermit' is seeing such a server at 192.168.1.1, i believe...
%-)
Hummm... Anyway. :^) Here's the rest of my instructions... From
the `Kermit' command-line type one of the KeyWords as mentioned above or
just follow the instructions on the screen... "Sailor" will connect you
to a remote `Lynx' text-mode ~WEB~ browser, "OutPost" to the BBS where i
have found the best `Kermit' support so far, etc. ;-) `OutPost' has my
favour in terms of transfer performance but it's not perfect: there's a
slight defect in the Welcome screen - one may have to press [Ctrl]+[H] 3
times to delete ~ANSI~ characters which invade the 1st LogOn line... It
is possible to redefine the [RubOut] key but this will have to wait. At
the end of a session the message "NO CARRIER" appears, it's a Hayes-like
MoDem response (`RLFossil' is a Virtual ~TelNet~ MoDem "Shim"). Now, to
leave the `MS-Kermit' terminal screen and return back to the `MS-Kermit'
command-line type [Alt]+[X], to drop to the DOS command-line type "exit"
and press [Return]. Sometimes a BBS will be slow to close a session, it
is possible to simply exit the terminal and drop to DOS, then [Ctrl]+[C]
usually makes `RLFossil' abort and you're ready again... :-) DownLoads
will start automatically, for UpLoads you must leave the terminal screen
(without ending the session) and start the transfer manually (type "Send
FileName.Ext" once you have moved to the right location); it's possible
for SysOps to automate UpLoads too but they'll need to work. That's it,
it took me a couple hours at best to create this setup, a user with some
experience must be able to experience `RLFossil'+`MS-Kermit' with access
from a router+~DSL~ MoDem without going thru too much pain, really! ;-)
-=*=-
My setup is for the user side, it's not intended for SysOps because
my security settings might be too permissive for a public access system,
it's not suitable for .QWK doors since ErrorLevel handling which normaly
prevents false message-pointer updates after a transfer is absent, users
would also have their user DownLoad packet-size restricted to 768 bytes!
`MS-Kermit' can talk directly to my packet-driver but i find it too
jerky to be practical... The `RLFossil'+`MS-Kermit' configuration is my
prefered one, even if it doesn't know about ~DHCP~ while the other does;
i don't know how to keep the ~DNS~ addresses up-to-date so that litteral
~IP~ resolution is made possible with `RLFossil' (i thought my setup was
OKay as it worked once, actually), euh... but i won't dispair just yet!
In fact, i've discovered that my previous statements about the 38K4
bps limit of the ~FOSSIL~ interface in `RLFossil' were premature after i
realized i could DownLoad from Sailor at 10K4 cps! I now dream of a day
when `RLFossil's source-code is found and ~DHCP~ support can be added...

As i wrote, you may not be able to use the tip right now but if you
have two PCs perhaps your guru can make one act like a router so that it
uses a DialUp access instead of a High-Speed one. Long ago i DownLoaded
a copy of `InterNet Extender v1.0 Beta' (`NAPT.EXE') by Jason Sarich and
Dan Lewis thinking that i'll be able to use it in a similar fashion, who
knows (oh, and it's for DOS - of course)... Well, have a very nice day!
Salutations, P^)
