I could add: when the lap acts hard, take care that no substantial amount
of dried polishing compound forms on the mirror.
I have done that once and the symptom has been an irrgular drag and a sound
thatis quite rougher (nothing like the velvet noise of polishing nor the
squeaking). I got scrathes near the edge... I guess it is the likely place
for polishing compound to dry :-(
Don't misunderstand me: it is normal that the drag in polishing gets very
intense, but it must keep regular. Mirrors are like women, they like it
strong, but not brutal ;-)
