I found *bash*, as per Subject line!  I've been able to finally run rexcfgl 

It wasn't the DAT files that were the problem.  It was the following files 
that held the necessary data:

general.rex
nodes.rex 
server.rex
gateway.rex
events.rex  
dialup.rex  

So far, so good.  I still need to edit the paths for linux.  The hard part 
will be to find all the ones needed.  

Further, using bash allows IREX to acess the proper help files with F1  
Gnome intercepted it.  Eterm didn't seem to pass the call along.  

Thanks to all for thhints and tips.  They've gotten me this far, and then 
some.  And, though I hate pdf's, I found one for Ubunyu that has the 
various commands and parameters.  (I still want the hard copy!)
