| subject: | Re: Drop 16-bit Max version? |
-=> Bob Jones wrote to William McBrine <=- BJ> Has any of the Linux / NetBSD / FreeBSD /etc. systems been compiled BJ> and use the 64 bit option on the Intel CPU line? Yes. However, Intel's 64-bit offering isn't really an "option", but an entirely new architecture, as different from x86 as any other. There's a 32-bit mode for compatibility, but it might as well be a separate processor. Nor is this new architecture particularly well-regarded -- it's hard to program, and neither notably fast nor cheap compared to other 64-bit processors. AMD's forthcoming 64-bit line, on the other hand, represents a true extension of the x86 architecture (for better and worse), and is likely to be fast and cheap. Linux already runs on these, too. Unfortunately, AMD is holding up release of the "desktop" version while waiting for Microsoft. ...
