Crap.  Baud and bits-per-second have COMPLETELY different meanings.

Wrong again.  His name was Baudot.

Not having a real good day, are you?  Baud relates to the number of STATE
changes per second (whether it be frequency, amplitude, voltage, or phase),
whilst there can be several bits per baud at higher signalling rates.  For
example, 33600 bits-per-second requires a baud (symbol) rate of 3429.  

Spot the difference yet?
