SC>You haven't burst my bubble. If you think SCSI is easier to set up than
SC>parallel, you're a better man than I... My BBS is a case in point. I
SC>must have pulled every hair out of my head trying to make SCSI-1 and
SC>SCSI-2 disk drives and backup tape drive all coexist in one system. I
SC>finally took all the SCSI-1 stuff off the bus to get things running. On
SC>my system, it just can't be done. I think with any type of peripheral,
SC>it's going to depend a whole lot on what's already there, what system
SC>resources are already consumed, and what type of resources can be
SC>configured for the peripheral.
I suspect that you either have 1) an older, not well-supported host adapter
r
2) faulty cabling and/or termination. I have had 0 problems setting up SCSI
devices, SCSI-1 mixed in with SCSI-2, on the same chain (with Adaptec host
adapters) that was not directly attributable to bad/poor cables or improper
termination. The host adapter negotiates with each device individually to
determine what can be supported so mixing new and old devices is a non-issue.
The catch is that use of SCSI-2 also means shorter cable lengths and active
termination that SCSI-1 doesn't require (but will work with perfectly).
Perhaps ANCIENT SCSI-1 devices may cause a problem (the first implentations
f
SCSI were far from perfect, based on what I've heard) so removing those may
prevent problems.
There's a reason you were having problems and if you wish to revisit them, we
can probably be of assistance with enough data and facts around the specific
hardware and software (drivers)...
