I thought he shot that one down. California wanted to have it's own
standard (they previously had one that the government used to model
theirs). Instead, he said that they couldn't have their own standards,
that they'd have to go by the Fed standards.

If that is how it is, I couldn't agree with him more. California has a
whacko group (CARB) who decides what's good for California and to hell
with the general public.

If I were an executive in a auto manufacturing company, I'd say let them
have their standards, but we won't be selling any cars there.

California tried to legislate 'electric' autos into existance and after an
attempt by manufacturers, the cars never materialized to the extent the
state wanted them to. When the manufacurers (GM leased their electrics,
no sales) pulled their models off the road and back into the dealerships,
there was nothing the state could do and so the electric mandate died.

CA's emissions standards and 42mpg by 2020 for all would be a disaster.
