subject: Why Arj?

Hello Raymond:
 > I never understood why people like ARJ so much..
  Different strokes, y'know. ;-)
 > it's a very big EXE file,
  Hmmm.
ARJ EXE 116260 06-04-93 9:19a
  1 file(s) 116260 bytes
PKUNZIP EXE 28959 02-01-93 2:04a
PKZIP EXE 42552 02-01-93 2:04a
PKZIPFIX EXE 7687 02-01-93 2:04a
ZIP2EXE EXE 26851 02-01-93 2:04a
  4 file(s) 106049 bytes
RAR EXE 104319 02-22-97 12:27a
UNRAR EXE 32037 01-01-97 6:54p
  2 file(s) 136356 bytes
Maybe not so enormous. 10,211 bytes larger than the PKWare utils. Not a
problem for many people.
 > the options can be found in most any other compression program,
  The more common options, certainly.
 > and actually the only cool thing about it is the multiple volumes...
  'Cool' ... yes, definitely.
 > but even at that, RAR is more fun...
I don't use a compression utility because it's 'fun'. My concerns are a
bit larger than the entertainment value associated with the given compression
and decompression util.
 > so if someone out there knows why ARJ is so famous (and why!) please reply
 > soon...
Reliability, consistency, ease of use, respectable compression ratios,
predictable response in unattended batch use, timely updates - basically the
sort of perks one comes to associate with a software author we all know and
respect. Mr. Jung's work tends to speak rather eloquently for itself.
If you like RAR, use it - we won't object. Those of us who don't care for
it have our reasons, virtually all of which are off-topic for this particular
forum. Likely enough they would be off-topic in any forum supporting RAR as
well.
To each his (her) own ... fair enough? Pleasant day, Raymond. :-)
