Why not try an old bicycle hub (aluminium) and use stainless spokes (all
sizes). You would need a compression hoop of some kind to distribute the
tension on the outside of the tube or truss, but the unthreaded end of the
spoke would prevent any serious axial play. I would use a rear hub for
large diagonals. If you need really short spokes you can cut the regular
ones down and thread them with a cheap die.
