Yes, you asked me the same question in netmail.
Time to clarify some facts for you Paul, since I feel that this discussion
is going in circles and isn't achieving much. Here are the facts:
The V.34 spec was ratified by the ITU-T. At the time, 31200 and 33600
connects were not implemented; probably not even developed at that time.
USRobotics was (naturally) the first modem manufacturer to develop and
release modems featuring the ability to connect at speeds greater than
28800 bps; ie, 31200 and 33600 bps. This was marketed as V.34+ by USR.
Other companies soon followed, releasing modems offering "V.34+"
modulation.
The ITU-T did not see fit to ratify V.34+ as V.34bis (for what reason, I
don't know; nor do I particularly care). Rather, the V.34 spec was EXTENDED
to allow for 31200 and 33600 connects. Ergo, V.34 includes all ITU connect
speeds up to and including 33600 bps.
I hope this clears matters up for you. If I'm incorrect in any of the above
assertions, someone will correct me. In the event that I may be wrong about
anything above, please stick around and read the replies ...
PW> Did the ITU-T use USR's code? Did the other companies use USR's code?
Perhaps Askey (Dynalink) did. As far as I can recall, Dynalink was the
first modem vendor to release 33.6k modems AFTER USRobotics. Apparently,
the 33.6k Dynalink is a re-badged USRobotics (Sportster or Courier, I don't
know).
