David,
This was a strange case! I have diagnostic software that indicated the
modem was working from COM4. It would even dial out to a test number
provided with the software. Qmodem just refused to recognize it on
COM4, 02E8, IRQ3 , but when we changed it to COM2, 02F8, IRQ3, everything
cleared up and it worked beautifully. Computer programs and modems are
strange people.
