Nope, they're just the quick way when you know how.
Most of the main desktop distros have every pickie for you to click your
mouse on you could wish for, whether setting up filesharing or installing
just about anything from a media player to a major server with multiple
virtual images of other servers within

Well that person is obviously a berk. I tend to use NVidia cards coz
they're very well supported under linux.
The screen I am typing this on is driven by a Nvidia card & no kernel
recompilations required.
