All kinds of experimentation, and it's still apparently not clear to the Powers that Be (or a lot of teachers, I'm sorry to say) that if you will teach the children basic skills, they will leave school as skilled individuals. Doy. And then, of course, Dubya wants to cut funding to "non-performing" schools--in other words, the schools whose children come to them with lower skills (usually low-income schools that don't have much in the way of resources to *help* the kids) end up losing *more* funding, which means that they can't buy supplies, and teachers can't live on their salaries and go elsewhere, and so you end up with the dregs of the teaching profession in the schools where the kids need the most help. Grrrrrr! I'm all for throwing out the experimentation and getting back to the good ol' days of reading, writing, and 'rithmetic. Oh, and government *support* of schools. That would be nice.
