Set it to train on medium bit error rate, retrain on medium bit error rate
and change some of the flow control settings:

Use the AT$H command to display the online help and perhaps use the
following settings:

&R CTS normal operating state

&S1 DSR on when ready to accept data

%R2 Enable auto rate adaption, medium BER

\Q3 Enable bilateral CTS/RTS flow control
\X1 Pass XON/XOFF characters to remote DCE

*TH1 Medium V.34 rate selection threshold

Apart from that, you might like to try disabling V.42bis BTLZ, but I
haven't had too many problems using them except to early V.34 modems using
the Rockwell 04BC datapump.
