As someone else mentioned, Y2K is not really an issue with DOS. In fact I
recall IBM released a number of Y2K patches for PC DOS 7.0, but that none
were related to the DOS kernel itself, but were just patches for some of
the utilities - but don't quote me on that. I'm not sure about MS-DOS
6.22, but it probably shares much of its code with PC DOS 7.0, so I suspect
there's no problem there either. There is also Caldera/Novell DOS, or
OpenDOS, which are most likely both Y2K-safe.
I'm not sure what remaining DOS limitations relate to Maximus.

So don't upgrade. Bob Jones' primary objective is to port Maximus to UNIX,
and his other objectives (long filenames and secure logins over IP) are
probably irrelevant to you. So you're unlikely to be missing out on any
new features. You may have also read that he has doubts about being able
to build a 16-bit DOS version at all using his compiler, so personally I
wouldn't count on another DOS version of Maximus ever being released (not
by Bob anyway), unless one of the assisting developers desperately wants a
32-bit version - and can test it! - or the 16-bit version is continued
somehow. Both situations seem rather unlikely, assuming everything else
goes to plan.

This has me a bit puzzled. If you hate Windows, are you going to connect
to the Internet using DSL on a PC running DOS? And why did you bother
replying at all if you plan on shutting down your BBS anyway?
