Hi Maurice!

MK> Now that is just plain weird.

Same as using FTN technology in 2017 ;)

MK> Who these days even has a phoneline

Me ... I do not use it, but there is a FXS port on my cable modem.
(I do not have a analog modem, but the emulated POTS phone port is there)

 MK> nevermind the Commodore 64?

I have more than one at home.
And I love them ;)

MK> I guess someone has given the date on the pdf. :::shrugging

Sorry ... do not get it.
This uses the ESP8266 WIFI chip, and was developed in 2016.

But I think you misunderstood.

This thing connects to the C64, and EMULATES a POTS modem.
In reality it goes over WiFi and uses telnet.

So you can use the C64 to connect to any telnet port (atdt192.168.0.254:23
connects to 192.168.0.254 on the telnet port, you can also connect to other
servers like webservers etc.)

RM>> But I guess this is offtopic here ...
MK> That I wouldn't know. The last POTs modem I had working (late 1990's)
MK> was an external Motorola jobber.

It is not a POTS modem.
It uses the serial routines in the C64 kernal and its userport serial interface
to interface to a IEEE 802.11bgn WiFi.

MK> I think the real question should be, does anyone care?

Yes, me ;)
And seemingly many more people, if you look at this thread:
