A lot. It's AT&T System V vs. BSD. You'll see that the init.d is a
link, though:
[root{at}melbourne etc]# ls -la /etc/init.d lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root
11 Jul 21 01:28 /etc/init.d
->rc.d/init.d
so they're really the same file.

That's... bad. Is it a path problem? Do a ls -la /sbin/chkconfig, and see
if it's there.
