Here's my path before logging in as root:
[randall{at}localhost browsers]$ echo $PATH
/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/randall/bin
Here's my longer path after logging in as root:
[root{at}localhost browsers]# echo $PATH
/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bi
n
:/home/randall/bin
So all it adds for the root is /usr/kerberos/bin.
BTW, the hostname command does not change the hostname permanently. The
manual says one has to edit the /etc/hosts file to do that. But am I
supposed to then change localhost.localdomain or localhost or both? See
below:
[root{at}localhost browsers]# cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
216.144.1.254 news.barkto.com
Aside: I did the news.barkto.com addition in hopes of speeding up access to
this group. Didn't help any.
