I've seen that happen too and I'm trying to remember how I got it to shut
up. [google, google, ah I remember now] It's the .Xauthority file which
isn't set up for root. You should be able to fix it by either copying your
own .Xauthority file to root:
(as root)# cp ~randall/.Xauthority ~
Strictly speaking you should run:
(as root)# xauth merge ~randall/.Xauthority
Since you're only running on the one machine this will do the same as the copy.
It gets much more fun when you have multiple machines, but once it's set up
right it makes for a great environment.

As a programmer I love *nix, but it's configuration can be a pain at times.
