The ps command shows a very short list of processes, fewer than I know are
running. But I can bring up the System Monitor and see the complete list.
The smbd and nmbd process names do not show up there.
I am wondering if I have Samba on my machine without having it configured to run.
Otherwise, should I try to get Samba from the Fedora site or from some
general site? Does one typically try to get a program as built for one's
particular distribution?
Okay, I ran locate and got what looks like promising stuff:
[randall{at}localhost ~]$ locate smbd
/selinux/booleans/allow_smbd_anon_write
/selinux/booleans/smbd_disable_trans
/usr/sbin/smbd
/usr/share/doc/samba-3.0.23/htmldocs/manpages/smbd.8.html
/usr/share/man/man8/smbd.8.gz
[randall{at}localhost ~]$ ls /usr/sbin/smbd
/usr/sbin/smbd
[randall{at}localhost ~]$ ls -l /usr/sbin/smbd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3802804 Jul 12 12:58 /usr/sbin/smbd
[randall{at}localhost ~]$
Is that /usr/sbin/smbd the thing I want?
Is there a proper way to configure it to run on start-up? I mean, do you
just put it in some file that has a list of processes to start up on the
load of the OS? If so, which file?
Or does Gnome or some other tool have an admin interface to interact with
to do this sort of thing?
