Hundreds Rush For Adoption Records
staff reporter
It'll be at least six weeks before adoptees get their birth and adoption
records,
after a rush of applications yesterday. (November 4, 1996)
Some 600 people showed up at B.C.'s four regional vital statistics offices.
"After we get over this hump, it'll be a 30 day turnaround," said Bill Moncur
at Victoria's vital-statistics office.
B.C.'s new Adoption Act, proclaimed yesterday (November 4, 1996), gives
adoptees access to complete birth and adoption records.
Nadine Andrews, 45, who was amoung the 40 people at the Maple Ridge
government agent's office before 10 a. m., was annoyed she has to pay a $50
fee, after paying $35 two years ago to get non-identifying information about
her birth.
For details of the new (Adoption) Act, call (the Vital Statistics Agency)
1-888-212-1188
(or Adoption Division 1-888-236-7888)

P.S. In addition to the 600+ applications for service filed at the Vital
Statistics Agency offices the government's
Adoption Reunion Registry 1-800-665-1899
also received over 800 phone calls.
