Those errors are consistent with an installation requiring root
permission. Review the installation documentation to see if is there
any way to install under your home. Some software does provide it,
others do not.
RP> Can I change my current user from a bash prompt?
You can use the 'su' command, like this:
The following changes the user:
doctor{at}tardis:/home/doctor$ su romana
Password:
romana{at}tardis:/home/doctor$
This changes the user AND makes the shell a login shell, it acts as if
you logged in into that account in the first place:
doctor{at}tardis:/home/doctor$ su - romana
Password:
romana{at}tardis:/home/romana$
You can also use 'su' without a username, in which case it will default
to root.
And you can use 'su' as root to take the identity of any user, without
having to know the password.
