Is your Dynalink the rebadged USR Sportster? If so, then you have broken V.42bis. Bear in mind that when I say broken, I don't mean that it doesn't work at all. What happens is the modem will occasionally "pause" for some 20 to 40 seconds during a connection, often quite repeatedly. As you can imagine, this greatly reduces overall performance, to the point where you would be better of with V.42bis turned off. Regards, Frank ...
