LP> Several researchers have indicated that the use of cannabis by the
LP> native peoples of what is now known as North America pre-dates the
LP> arrival of Europeans in 1492. Early explorer Jacques Cartier, who
LP> was from a hemp growing district in France, reported hemp growing
LP> here and in use by the native Indians.
The Hopi people don't seem to have any recollection of this, but their
forebears, the Anasazi, used hemp in the kivas, which were actually big
smoking devices they sat inside. Archeologists have found charred
hempseed in the firepits when they are first excavated, but this
information has been suppressed by the authorities.
